What the lines represent

The currents layer depicts modeled ocean surface movement, using sampled fields and direction estimates. Particle animation is a visualization of relative flow; it is not direct current-meter telemetry for every displayed location.

Coverage and time

Samples may be sparse or older than the present moment. Areas with missing provider data should remain unfilled rather than fabricated. Source time and available units are central to interpretation.

Compare with tides

Coastal tides are a different phenomenon and may use observed levels plus predictions at supported stations.
